Final Lecture to Focus on Weapons’ Proliferation and Conflict in the Greater Middle East

Geoffrey Kemp, director of the Regional Strategic Programs at The Nixon Center in Washington, D.C., will be on campus next Tuesday, Apr. 8, to deliver the ninth and final speech in a series of University lectures focusing on the Iraqi-American confrontation. Kemp, a visiting professor at The Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) of Johns Hopkins University, will present “Powder Keg: Weapons’ Proliferation and Conflict in the Greater Middle East,” from 2 until 3:30 p.m., in the Dumke Auditorium of the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, located next to the David Eccles School of Business. The event, co-sponsored by the Office of the President, the Department of Political Science and the Colleges of Humanities and Social and Behavioral Science, is free and open to the public.

People Productions Presents “The Talented Tenth”

People Productions, Utah’s only African American themed theatre, will present Richard Wesley’s The Talented Tenth, as a part of the University of Utah’s 27th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration. The play, influenced by an essay by the great African American writer, W.E.B. Du Bois, chronicles a group of successful African American men struggling with success and complacency 25 years after their involvement with Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement.

Sir Ken Robinson to Speak at U on Creativity, Culture, Education

Sir Ken Robinson, internationally recognized leader in the development of creativity, innovation, education and human resources, will deliver the keynote address for the 60th anniversary celebration of the College of Fine Arts at the University of Utah. The lecture will take place Monday, March 9 at 6 p.m. in the Libby Gardner Hall on the University of Utah campus and is free and open to the public.

Pride Week Celebrated at the U

Human rights activist, poet and teacher Ericka Huggins will give the keynote address at this year’s Pride Week Celebration at the University of Utah. Activate, Transform, Evolve is the title for Pride Week which will take place from October 20th through the 24th and will feature a variety of events. Huggins will speak on October 23 at noon in the Utah Museum of Fine Arts. A “gay-la” dinner and silent auction will close the week’s events on October 24 at 6:00 p.m. at the IJ and Jeanne Wagner Jewish Community Center located at 2 North Medical Drive.

Understanding the Shia-Sunni conflict

Iranian studies scholar Dr. Vali Nasr will discuss the Shia-Sunni Conflict and how it contributes to the politics of change in the Middle East at the 15th Reza Ali Khazeni Memorial Lecture Series in Iranian Studies. Two lectures will take place on Thursday, September 6 at 4:30 p.m. in the Hinckley Institute of Politics Caucus Room in Orson Spencer Hall, room 255 and Friday, September 7 at 6:30 p.m. in the Utah Museum of Fine Arts. Both lectures are free and open to the public.
