February 27, 2003 — Chuck Williamson, chairman and chief executive officer of Unocal, will speak about drilling deep for oil at 4 p.m. Thurs. March 6 at the University of Utah.

Williamson’s talk – “Going Deep: An Exploration and Production Technology Frontier” – will be in room 103 of the Engineering and Mines Classroom Bldg., which is located on Central Campus Drive directly south of the Merrill Engineering Bldg.

The lecture is part of the University of Utah Department of Geology and Geophysics Distinguished Lecture Series.

Williamson, a 1973 masters’ degree holder from the U’s Department of Geology and Geophysics, was elected chairman of Unocal October, 2001 and CEO in January 2001. He previously was executive vice president of international energy operations. He was appointed to the company’s board of directors in December 1999.

Born in Ohio, he went from Utah to the University of Texas, where he received his Ph.D. in geology in 1978.

Williamson joined Unocal in 1977 after working for two years as a geologist with Exxon. From 1977 to 1983, he was a research associate for Unocal’s science and technology division in Brea, Calif. In 1983, he was named chief exploration geologist for Unocal in the United Kingdom, and in 1986, he became exploration manager and director of Unocal Netherlands in The Hague.

Williams was named vice president, exploration, for Unocal Thailand, and was based in Bangkok from 1989-1992. He then returned to the energy resouces division as vice president. In 1994, he was named vice president of planning and information services. In 1995, he became vice president for corporate planning and economics. In 1996, he was named as group vice president, Asia Operations.

He is chairman of the U.S.-ASEAN Business Council and is on the board for the U.S.-China Business Council, California Arts Society, U.S. Indonesia Society, Los Angeles World Affairs Council and the American Petroleum Institute. He also serves on the American Geological Institute Foundation, Stanford University Earth Sciences Advisory Board and the University of Texas Geology Foundation and College of Natural Science Advisory Board, and is a member of the National Petroleum Council.
