August 21, 2013 – The Center for World-Class Universities of Shanghai Jiao Tong University ranks the University of Utah number 85 in the 2013 Academic Ranking of World Universities, which lists the top 500 universities in the world each year.

Since the ARWU started a decade ago, the University of Utah has consistently ranked in the top 100 and is the only school in the state to achieve this honor.

“The Academic Ranking of World Universities is recognized for its focus on empirical indicators of quality and performance as opposed to rankings that include a heavy emphasis on reputational assessment,” said Ruth Watkins, senior vice president of Academic Affairs. “We are pleased to see the University of Utah recognized among the top 100 universities in the world and aspire to continue to progress in our visibility as a top international university in the years ahead.”

In addition to the general ranking, universities were also ranked according to broad fields and individual academic subjects.

In broad fields of study category, the U ranked:

–          49 for life and agricultural sciences

–          Top 75 for clinical medicine and pharmacy

–          Top 100 for social science and engineering/technology and computer science

–          Top 150 for natural sciences and mathematics

In the individual subject category, the U ranked:

–          Top 75 for mathematics, chemistry and computer science

–          Top 100 for economics/business

ARWU uses six objective indictors to rank each university, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, the number of highly cited researchers, the number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science, the number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index–Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index and per capita performance. More than 1,200 universities are ranked each year, and the best 500 are published.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities is published annually, and a complete list of rankings can be found at http://www.arwu.org/.
