U Offers New Graduate Certificate in Information Systems

The University of Utah’s David Eccles School of Business now offers a graduate certificate in information systems to help advance careers and enhance technical proficiency.

Feb. 13, 2014 – The demand for business professionals who know about technology is growing, and the David Eccles School of Business at the University of Utah has created a new certificate program to help advance careers and enhance technical proficiency.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics show that jobs in computer and information systems will grow 15 percent in the next decade. Both Utah County and Davis County ranked in the top 10 nationally for technology jobs created between 2007 and 2012, and Goldman Sachs houses one of its largest divisions – the technology division – in its Salt Lake City office.

“The demand for technology-savvy business professionals is fueled by rapid advances in big data, mobile and cloud computing, information security, business intelligence and companies’ reliance on accurate analytics,” said Bradden Blair, program director for information systems at the David Eccles School of Business. “A graduate certificate in information systems will help professionals be better prepared for new opportunities that will arise in coming years. And for students studying other areas of business like finance, management or accounting, adding knowledge of cutting-edge technology will only enhance their value for future employers.”

The graduate certificate in information systems will require 18 credit hours of study from the David Eccles School of Business Operations and Information Systems department for completion, and there are no specific course requirements. Rather, students are free to choose a broad spectrum of coursework or specialize in areas like cyber security, business intelligence and analytics, product and process management, or software and systems architecture.

Whether a student is adding to their work in another field of study or is a professional looking to add technology skills to enhance their personal resume or improve their companies’ IT outlook, the graduate certificate in information systems offers maximum flexibility. Students may start the program in fall, spring or summer, and courses are offered primarily in the evening to meet the needs of working professionals. The courses and faculty involved are shared with the U’s Master of Science in Information Systems program, assuring the highest level of instruction and hands-on learning.
