Redfest Goes Green

This year’s Redfest is going “green.” The annual student-organized festival put on by ASUU’s Presenter’s Office is centered on teaching students to embrace a more sustainable lifestyle. Events and activities for this year’s Redfest will be held at various times Sept. 18 and 19. “Through environmentally friendly entertainment, the Presenter’s Office hopes two days of exciting events can help lead to a healthier earth,” said office director Amanda Mecham.

Redfest will focus on going green with the help of companies in the community. Redfest shirts are from the firm Green Brand and are produced from recycled cloth. There will be a variety of green-themed activities, such as a recycled fashion show, tote designing, and a dumpster dive.

Other activities at the festival include a gaming station with Guitar Hero Tour and EA Sports, as well as a mechanical bull, and a chance to win a free bike. To continue the message of green education the Presenter’s Office will be repeatedly showing the short film “The Story of Stuff.” As the producer’s Web site (http://www.storyofstuff.com/) explains the film “exposes the connections between a huge number of environmental and social issues, and calls us together to create a more sustainable and just world.”

Redfest also presents an amazing concert line-up this year with headliner Matisyahu, and supporting acts Brother Ali, and Kalai. The shows will be held outside on the Union Plaza at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18. University of Utah students can purchase discounted tickets with their student I.D. for $6 at the front desk of the Union. Tickets for the general public are available through Smith’s Tix.

The opening show of the “green” art gallery will be held on Friday, Sept. 19. The gallery continues the green theme as it encourages artists to demonstrate being earth-friendly through their art. The grand opening will start at 5:00 p.m. in the Union Student Lounge and the show will run for two weeks thereafter. “Art Goes Green” includes art from U of U students and local artists.

Also on Friday, students are invited to celebrate the environment through snowboarding. ASUU’s Presenter’s Office teams up with the One Love Ski & Snowboard Club and Milo Sport to present Mack Dawg Productions new 20th anniversary snowboarding film “Double Decade.” There will be pros signing autographs, hand outs, and giveaways all starting at 7:00 p.m. at the Union Plaza.
