University of Utah Health Care and Kennecott Land Break Ground on New Specialty Center in South Jordan’s Daybreak Community

Officials from University of Utah Health Care and Rio Tinto’s Kennecott Land broke ground today on a 208,000 square foot facility that will provide residents of southern Salt Lake County with convenient access to the University’s primary, specialty and emergency health care services. The new building will include outpatient exam rooms, an outpatient surgery center, medical imaging services, a pharmacy, space for community education, a restaurant, and a fully-staffed 24-hour-a-day emergency room. The center will also feature specialty services provided by the University’s Huntsman Cancer Hospital, Moran Eye Center, Orthopaedic Center, and Neuropsychiatric Institute.

The University of Utah Announces 2006 Diversity Awards

The University of Utah is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2006 Diversity Awards. Four individuals at the University of Utah will be presented with awards and recognition at the 11th annual Diversity Awards luncheon on December 5. The awards are given each year to outstanding individuals or organizations that demonstrate an active commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity at the University of Utah. According to Karen Dace, University of Utah, Senior Associate Vice President for Diversity, “These awards recognize continuous and consistent efforts of the individuals and campus units to foster a more inclusive climate and create greater access and opportunities for diverse students, staff, and faculty.” This year’s award recipients are Dan Edwards, Steve Nygaard, David Pershing and Wilfred Samuels.

March of Dimes Awards $250,000 Prize to Pioneers in Genetic Research

University of Utah geneticist Mario Capecchi has won numerous prizes for developing “gene targeting,” a method of knocking a gene out of action in mice to determine what goes wrong and thereby identify the gene’s normal function. Today, May 9, 2005, the March of Dimes announced it has awarded its Prize in Developmental Biology to Capecchi and University of North Carolina researcher Oliver Smithies for their roles in developing gene targeting.
