Unbiased College Ranking System Showcases U of U Programs

College rankings are often criticized by administrators and prospective students as unscientific and nothing more than popularity contests. However, the Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index, now in its second year, is being touted as a much more fair way to judge institutions of higher education. The new ranking system rates faculty members’ scholarly output at nearly 7,300 doctoral programs around the country and, according to its results, the University of Utah is the state’s top school.

U Architecture Students Take Prestigious National Design Competition

Chicago’s lakefront can be blustery at this time of year, but recently judges at the Metal Construction Association’s (MCA’s) ninth annual Student Competition were treated to visions of what could occur in the summer months on Lake Michigan’s shores. The judges awarded first and second place in the 2006 MCA Student Design Competition to designs by students from the University of Utah School of Architecture + Planning in Salt Lake City.

Summit to Explore Challenges of Growth in Utah

According to Utah’s 2006 Economic Report to the Governor, prepared by the Governor’s Office of Planning and Budget, Utah’s population reached 2.2 million in 2000. This number is projected to more than double to 4.7 million by 2040, a growth rate more than twice the national rate. While providing many opportunities to the Beehive State, this growth will also result in many challenges to the water supply, education and transportation infrastructure, among others.

A Nursery for Hurricanes

Every hurricane season, about 100 low-pressure weather disturbances whirl westward out of West Africa and over the Atlantic Ocean, but less than one-fifth of them become tropical depressions, storms or hurricanes. University of Utah meteorology Professor Ed Zipser is chief scientist of a National Aeronautics and Space Administration mission to study why some African weather disturbances become storms and hurricanes, many of which hit the United States.

University of Utah Chicano Scholarship Fund Receives $50K Gift from Ibarra Foundation

The University of Utah Chicano/a Scholarship Fund (CSF) announced today the receipt of a major donation from the Ibarra Foundation created by Utah brothers David and Mickey Ibarra. The $50,000 gift will establish three renewable, full-ride Ibarra Foundation Scholarships through the Chicano/a Scholarship Fund. The first two scholarships will be presented to freshmen students in the amount of $5,000 each, per year, for four years for a total of $40,000. The third scholarship will be awarded to a junior or senior and will be funded for two years at $5,000 per year for a total of $10,000. This will bring the Ibarra Foundation’s total commitment to the University of Utah to $50,000 to be given over a period of four years. Scholarship winners will be announced at the Chicano/a Scholarship banquet on May 9, 2006.

Olympic Cauldron to Burn Again at the University of Utah

In recognition of the XX Olympic Winter Games, which will be held Feb. 10 through 26, in Torino, Italy, Utah’s own Olympic Cauldron will be lit during the evening hours on Feb. 10, 11 and 12 and will burn until 11 p.m. The University is extending a special invitation to the public to visit the Olympic Cauldron Park and the Salt Lake 2002 Visitors Center, located on the south end of the U’s Rice-Eccles Stadium, 500 S. 1400 E. The Park will have extended hours, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 10, and Saturday, Feb. 11, and will be open from noon until 8 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 12.

Ongoing efforts to improve quality of care, operational efficiency, and financial performance have earned University of Utah Hospitals & Clinics and its leadership team a spot on the annual roster of the country’s 100 most-improved hospitals. The list, based on a study by health-care information company Solucient, was reported in a recent issue of Modern Healthcare magazine.
