Man in Charge of Buildings at the U, Has One Named After Him

As Associate Vice President for Administrative Services in charge of design, planning and plant operations, he has literally sculpted the landscape of the campus. To honor Turpin today upon his retirement, the Board of Trustees announced the renaming of the University Services Building to the V. Randall Turpin University Services Building.

U of U Undergrads Showcase Research Before Utah Lawmakers

More than two dozen University of Utah undergraduate students will join counterparts from Utah State University in presenting “Posters on the Hill: A Celebration of Undergraduate Research” to Utah State Legislators on Thursday, Jan. 23, from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m., in the rotunda of the State Capitol. The event, now in its third year, gives lawmakers the opportunity to see the high-caliber research projects coming from undergraduate students at the state’s two public research institutions.

U of U to Offer Career Services to Alumni Job Seekers

“Ben” is one of 20,000 Utahans who lost his job last year. Due to the downturn in the economy, last March the 36-year-old was laid off from his full-time investment-banking job. A few months later Ben, who has an M.B.A., landed another job as a financial advisor, but he continues to look for a managerial position with a solid company that will grow. Recently he was one of 150 applicants for one position in the financial sector. He describes the job market as “incredibly bleak.”

Face of Rice-Eccles Stadium to Change Forever Groundbreaking Set for Olympic Cauldron Park

Work will officially begin Wed., Oct. 2 on the new Olympic Cauldron Park, to be located at the University of Utah’s Rice-Eccles stadium. The groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. just south of the stadium”s main scoreboard. Work on the park should be completed in time for a Feb. 8 anniversary celebration of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. Further details of that event will be announced at the groundbreaking.

More than Four Hundred At-Risk Youth Participate in Free Summer Sports Program at University of Utah

On weekdays in July, hundreds of young students, from nine Salt Lake City schools, have converged on the University of Utah campus to take part in a wide variety of afternoon health, sports and educational activities. They are participants in the free, five-week National Youth Sports Program (NYSP), a project that targets at-risk youth, ages 10 to 16.
