November 10, 2006 — The University of Utah’s Department of Art and Art History presents Hamza Walker, who will deliver a visiting artist lecture on Thursday, November 16, 2006 at 5:00 p.m. at 375 S. 1530 E., Salt Lake City, in Art Room 158. It is the third in the 2006-07 Visiting Artist and Art Historian Lecture Series. The lecture, entitled “Generational Dislocations: The Case of Raymond Pettibon and Charles Manson,” is free and open to the public.

Walker will discuss Charles Manson as the subject of numerous drawings by Los Angeles-based artist Raymond Pettibon, whose work is synonymous with the LA punk scene of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Analyzing Pettibon’s Manson drawings, this lecture examines the intergenerational transmission of youth culture and the fate of the 1960s.

Since 1994, Hamza Walker has served as Director of Education/Associate Curator for The Renaissance Society at The University of Chicago-a non-collecting museum devoted to contemporary art. His most recent curatorial endeavors include “New Video, New Europe: A Survey of East European Video Art, 2004,” “A Perfect Union, More or Less, 2004,” “The Here and Now, 2005,” “All the Pretty Corpses, 2005,” “Peter Welz Whenever On On On Nohow On, 2005,” “Mai-Thu Perret, And Every Woman Will Be a Walking Synthesis of the Universe, 2006.”

Walker was the recipient of the 1999 Norton Curatorial Grant and the 2005 Walter Hopps Award for curatorial achievement. He has written for numerous monographs in addition to publications such as Artforum and Parkett.
