University of Utah Green Power Purchases Propels Pac-12 to EPA Top Ranking

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is recognizing the University of Utah for its commitment to environmental stewardship. The U ranks third in the nation in a new listing of colleges and universities participating in the EPA’s Green Power Challenge. The university earned this ranking by increasing green power use by 15 percent in 2011 and purchasing more than 98 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of green power, 36 percent of its total power use.

Students Eliminate Stovetop Fires, Claim $40,000 at the UEC

The shrill warning of a smoke alarm has always signaled danger — yet a new device detects the alarm and shuts off power to the stove, successfully eliminating a fire threat. That invention and the student team behind it, called Active Alarm, earned the grand prize and $40,000 in this year’s Utah Entrepreneur Challenge (UEC). The annual business plan competition is based at the University of Utah and open to university students across the state.
